Trail Overview

The trail starts uphill at once, an early indicator of the sort of grade you’ll face for the vast majority of the hike. Almost at once, a valley will open up to your right, with Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon visible in the distance. Colorful mountain flowers grow all around in the summer.

The trail climbs steadily for 0.6 mile before briefly leveling as it heads around a bend. The summit is visible ahead, with the Grand Canyon still to your right. Soon the steady uphill grade resumes.

At 1.4 miles you will reach the first of a series of switchbacks—the second bends at 1.7 and the third at 2.1 miles. Here you will be able to enjoy views to the west side of the park.

At 2.5 miles the final switchback offers another view of the tower on the summit before the trail swings around a rocky, open area. At 3 miles, hike along a wooden fence and the remains of the asphalt road that once ran to the summit. At 3.3 miles you will come to a col, with massive views back down into the valley toward the canyon and equally impressive glimpses to the northwest. Around this area you will likely encounter the goats that live just below the summit—respect these creatures as the wild animals they are.

At 3.5 miles you will arrive at the summit and fire tower. When you are ready to return, retrace your steps back down to the parking area.
